Butterflies ..............

We seem to be such wargaming butterflies as we flit from period to period, from week to week. Whilst I have been painting the bits and pieces for this weekend's Roman skirmish game I have been reading Outlaw by Angus Donald, a retelling of the Robin Hood legend which sent me scurrying to the book shelves to see if I could get away with using my Norman's, and yes I can, until the end of the 12th Century by which point the kite shield had been replaced by the more fashionable Heater shape.

Last weekend saw us playing Battletech, a game I hadn't played in 20 years. We had a good game and will play again, this time with miniatures and terrain. Might buy a few mechs, we'll see.

Stu, who might suffer from the gaming equivalent of ADHD, brings up 'The British Civil War' set in the late 30's, where Edward VII doesn't abdicate and asks Moseley to form a government. The country breaks up in to civil war. The source book, hopefully in my hands next week, outlines the national picture and encourages games set 'locally' hence the clipping below.


This might be the excuse I need to paint my Foundry Home Guard I've had since they were released. I have the pack of civilian characters stashed somewhere in the garage too along with some Battle Honours resistance fighters. The first 3 packs of German Paratroops are also in the garage, I doubt Herr Hitler could have resisted dabbling in British politics particularly if it would have affected our reputation in the rest of the world.

Basically it seems a good excuse to dig out odds and sods of figures from late WW1, Pulp, Gangsters and early WW2 and have a skirmish game. Rules would most likely be Arc of Fire or if we were really brave Battleground.

Uncharted Seas

A bunch of people at the club had bought and painted fleets up for the Uncharted Seas fantasy naval game by Spartan Games. The models looked good and ever wanting projects that are quick to get to table I have ordered the Dwarf fleet pack and the rulebook (both from different sellers on ebay saving 10-15% on the retail price and paying no postage. Bargain!



Coincidently, being all resin, this is the cheapest set only costing £13.90 and it only looks like a couple of evenings painting. Regrettably the next game at the club clashes with something else so I will have to miss it.

I have been cracking on with the bits and pieces for the Roman game, finding my pack horses from the garage and rereading plenty of Simon Scrarrow for inspiration.

Upcoming Games

I have the next three gaming sessions set up, starting next weekend with a large game of Battletech, a game I haven't played since the 80's although I did fancy the clicky version after seeing a tournament - just don't like the randomness of the pieces.

Following that I am running a LOTR based Imperial Romans vs Germans skirmish, every is painted figure wise but I taking the opportunity to paint up some bits that have been lurking around forever.





This pieces come from Grand Manner and 1st Corps, whilst the oxen and cart are from Wargames Foundry as are the engineers.

2 weeks after that, and the weekend of coming back off my holiday I am playing Cold War Commander, the opposing army is Chinese so the scenario may be based on a clash over Hong Kong. Here's a couple of Timecast buildings I grabbed from the garage and painted on a whim.



I don't really need to paint anything up for this game but would like to have some aircraft finished just because I know Stu doesn't have any!

Flash ................... Arrrrrrrrrrgh

Last night Stuart returned us to the pulp sci-fi dramas of our youth. Dane, Mark and I fought over a table set in a 1950's British Town or village. Earth has fallen to the victorious legions of Ming the Merciless. Ming is enslaving the earth with his Red Guard and Lizardmen mercenaries. With a curfew in force only the brave and foolish dared to venture out.

Buildings and terrain bits are from Grand Manner, Snapdragon, Old Crow/Ainsty and Plasticville, miniatures are from a number of sources, hopefully Stu will comment on these if I miss any out. Rules were Chain Reaction 3 from Two Hour Wargames.

My after action reports are often written up days after the game, relying on the photos to remind me of the action, regrettably this does mean I tend to remember more of the action I was involved in. Details may change and names changed to protect the innocent.





Here's a couple of images of the table. The mat is a roll of kitchen lino.





Ming's Red Guard secure their leader and Dr Zarkof.



The remainder of the Red Guard move out to secure the game objective, the Mongo shuttle.



Ming's daughter Princess Aura and 2 robots defend the crash site.



Here are the local human resistance, the initial humans comprise some coppers with truncheons, and handful of shotgun toting locals and the rest seem to get by with a stout 2x4. Oh, and children with dustbin lids.



To enforce the curfew Ming use security bots on the street corners, as humans came into view, the bot opened up with it's laser, dropping one to the floor.



Here's 'Flash' and two officers of her majesty's constabulary.



The shotgun armed group seize a building and exchange fire with a security bot.



The Red guard move up, I realised that I might as well move Ming up too rather than leave him out of the game.



The mercenary Lizardmen advance let by their leader in his battle armour suit, ok its an egg.



The mercenaries advance knocking all their foes to the ground.



The Guard receive fire from the house, killing one of their number, whilst the prepare to use the sonic cannon.





Other guards, with Zarkoff, continue towards the crash site. Zarkoff is needed to make essential repairs.



Squads of US Marines are now entering the table, don't ask where they came from (Stu's figure case - good job it wasn't the Japanese, he's got loads more of those), but still they come.



More Marines seek the cover of some wooden ruins.



Inbetween the robots and the Marines can be found some strange plants which lash out at the humans.



The final squad of Marines move on to the table and head towards the Mercenaries.



As the Marines open up, the Mercenaries take casualties.



As the Marines cross the road in front of the Mongo Guards, which after withering laser fire they begin to regret.



Robots and Marines exchange fire.



The sonic cannon opens up on the Marines in the wooden ruin, whilst others fall to laser fire.



There doesn't seem to be many Lizardmen left at this point.



A whole bunch of obviously dead rolls, thinned out the Marine ranks. The game was still arguably still in the balance when we called it a night but maybe the Mongo forces had the edge.
